Brockenhurst village people Saturday
30 Oct 2004 witnessed the rededication of the village fire bell after restoration.
First erected around 1910 and situated in the garden of Rosseta cottage on our village cross roads, this has been a prominent feature, but sadly due to rot at the base of the wooden post, it was in danger of collapse.
After careful removal by the village firemen, the bell and mounting bracket were taken away for renovation and the post was shortened slightly and reinstalled on a metal support.
Now complete with new bell rope, the bell was sounded today for the first time in many years by the Assistant Chief Fire Officer of Hampshire, Alan House, whose family are Brockenhurst villagers.
I remember as a child reaching over the fence and giving the bell rope a good tug on many occasions.
