The Kia-Ora Hall.
Situated on the village cross roads, and now in use as the local Masonic hall, this building was used extensively as a New Zealand soldiers hospital during the first world war.
More or less unchanged in 100 years, it is now due to be demolished to make way for a new Masonic hall and numerous flats we do not need.
The planning application has been thrown out due to the size of the proposed development, but will no doubt be re-submitted and passed sooner or later, against the wishes of the local residents.
The end result is this unobtrusive building will no longer exist, and what is left of the open aspect to our village shopping centre will be turned into a crowded urban slum, unless of course the village residents get together and stop it.
At the rear of this building is the village football club and ground.
Once again there was an attempt to develop the entire area but fortunately the developers did not get their way on this occasion, so hopefully at least that has been saved for future generations.
